About Utrecht
Utrecht is the most bicycle-friendly city in the world (according to the Copenhagenize Index 2025) and applies an innovative approach to sustainable mobility. Cycling is deeply embedded in daily life across the city and the wider region: from the world’s largest covered bicycle parking facility to an extensive network of safe and efficient cycling routes. Cycling is a natural and integral part of both everyday and recreational life in Utrecht.
62% of residents (18+) regularly take recreational cycling trips, together accounting for more than 19 million cycling journeys (of at least one hour) per year. These trips are made not only on traditional bicycles (42%), but also increasingly on e-bikes (38%), making the region accessible to a wide range of target groups. Cyclists make extensive use of the comprehensive route network, with 61% navigating via the national cycling junction system, supported by clear signage and digital route apps. This quality is widely recognised: Utrecht scores an average of 8.2 as a cycling region.
